Time Warner's Warner Bros. movie studio announced today that they will no longer produce films in HD DVD format from June 2008 and that they will become Blu-ray exclusive. With this move, Blu-ray will own 70% of the high definition market share, basically putting the nail in the coffin for Toshiba's HD DVD.
“Warner Bros.’ move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want," stated Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. "The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers."
Since Warner Bros. controls 18%-20% of DVD sales in the United States, this should lead to quite the bump in eventual Blu-ray sales. "Consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray, and we believe that recognizing this preference is the right step in making this great home entertainment experience accessible to the widest possible audience," said Kevin Tsujihara, President, of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.
Blu-ray exclusive studios now include:
- Sony Pictures (MGM, Columbia, Tristar)
- Disney (Pixar, Buena Vista, Miramax)
- 20th Century Fox
- Warner Bros. (New Line Cinema)
- Lion Gate Films
Stay tuned for more information.
Update: Apologies, we left out that Warner will continue to release HD DVD titles until the end of May 2008, after which it will become Blu-ray exclusive.

Oh yeah. That makes my pie taste a little nicer tonight.
Sweet, can't wait untill this crap is over.
This is GREAT news for Sony and the future of the PS3. Too bad Microsoft's Ultimate 360 is going to be a little late to the format war, won't help at all now.
Great news...for a great future!
psn id: gingo.... @Greyfox666, lol blu ray has been in the lead by quite a large margin for some time this is just the final nail in hd dvds prolonged coffin
It's no secret that Blu-Ray has had the lead since the beginning and continues to outsell HDead-DVD and it's good to see Warner Bros. base their decision on that rather than a payout.
And even if they took a payout it's still a logical choice. Now it's time for Paramount to own up to their stupid decision, forget about the 18 month exclusivity contract, and go total Blu.
@tom nice lol perfect for this
Thank you! All those people trying to say that PS3 owners didn't watch BR's while HD-DVD's stand alone sales were higher should really feel ashamed now. They honeslty said it like they believed in its power. Blu ray has been outselling HD DVD's for pretty much an entire year straight. WB just looked at their returns they do not care how many people have HD DVD in thier homes. If the format is not pulling in as much money as blu ray or even more then there is no point.
I personally think the harry potter with advanced features was the killing blow. I guess WB was hoping for a surge in sales from the HD DVD camp to justify their effort. To bad the consumers have spoken and yet the fanboys well bleat and bray like always.
It's Curtains!!! Cancel Christmas!! Done Deal! There should be a trade-in system for the HD-DVD folks as I do feel very sorry for those suck...I mean customers.....
I saw this coming now we need Universal to join us btw Paramount is screwed
Im watching a Blu-ray movie right now.:D
You can't possibly think hd-dvd will win now. All the big companies on blu-ray will not go over to blu-ray so eventually paramount will give up. This is very good news for blu-ray, sony, and PS3, and horrible news for microsoft. hahahahaha.
yay, Beta AVENGED
LOL i knew this was gunna happen one time or another... cause blue ray is the BEST!
oh yea
This just made my day :D and my year! now everyone comon, lets go rub it in M$ faces! lol, but i feel sory for the ones who spent thier money on HD DVcrap.
Awesome news!!!! Now I can REALLY start to buy blu-rays w/o fearing another Betamax...I wonder why they are delaying it for 5 months though? When does Universal's contracts expire?
yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!!!!!!
@ Justin Pinter (article author)
You should add another update that from now until May 08 all DVD and Blu Ray versions of their movies will be release before the HD DVD version.
Reason why they delayed it until end of May is because they have HD-dvd's probably still being made so they have to convert things over plus why not milk the system a little longer :D
Also i am waiting a couple months now before i start a blu-ray collection i mean its a good product but i want them to be the standalone and soon that will happen it looks like.
ME personally i am waitng for Paramount to come over so i can have my Star Trek on blu-ray :D
Eh okay? Now how long will this end for once.
Now its only a matter of time before the rest of the studios will follow suit. Warner just offically pulled the life support plug on HD DVD. Beep....Beep...Beep....Beep....BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP
You hear that sound Crashbox3fixme fans? Listen to it because your next.
By gosh I didn't buy those 50+ Blu ray movies for nothing! Hopefully Paramount and Universal switch by next year (2009). There's a lot more on Blu ray that I'll buy when they get with the program.
dang thats it for hd dvd all we need is paramount n we good
Great!
Yay for Blu-Ray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I knew we could do it baby!
HAHAHAHAHA! Awesome news! About time we get some earth shaking news! I was getting bored with all these boring news all month long. Yeah, something really drastic would have to happen for HD-DVD to come back. Any ideas? I actually don't think it's possible. That makes the X-Box, Non-Gen. M$ is gonna hafta make some new format for the X-Box 720 or whatever the next system is gonna be called. Cause if they use Blu-Ray it's gonna be like bowing down to Sony. Hilarious stuff. Viva Sony!
I would rather watch a movie on VHS rather than on HDDVD. Seriously, i am not kidding. I am glad that WB made the decision that we all knew they would make. Now it is time to finally put to rest this format war and move on with BD as the sole HD format. Thanks WB.
Ha ha ha! I knew that one thumbs down was gonna show up sonner or later, I swear there must be somebody who really hates this site just lurking in the shadows.
So what do all yall think the topic is going to be discussed at CES next wekk when WB are at the HD-DVD conference??? "Ummmm you all can kiss our @ $ $. End of discussion" LOL
now i want the matrix trilogy on blue ray now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thats good news and im wondering if microsoft will still considering using hd-dvd for extra capacity for games. But then again they may do a weird move if they added an internal blu ray drive it would just be the most historic jacked up gaming strategic move from an gaming company ever.
Blu-ray is the superior format.. good to see people are taking notice :)
FATALITY
Blue Ray Wins !
I knew that Blu Ray would win the format war when I heard that Sony was going to have their BD drive built in to their PS3 system and knowing that M$ did not have their HD DVD drive built in to their game system... Sony has portrayed more confidence in their BD format than M$ has portrayed to their HD format or they would have permanently built it in to their system... M$ might even offer a BD add-on some time in the future... There has just always been more corporate support for Sony's Blu Ray than for the other format...
Now, this are good news.
Hey, Paramount, don't you guys wanna take the train?
Yipppie! HD-DVD is dying! The Blu-ray is going to be the standard HD format.
This is truly a historical day! The day of victory for Blu-ray! Let's all enjoy this glorios day! *Salute*
good news for sony. not that it wasn't clearly gonna happen from the start. btw the leader of the HD camp is toshiba not Microsoft. Microsoft wanted to prolong the war until they perfected their digital distribution service, no chance of that now :D.
Sorry MS it looks like you guys have made only the wrong decisions since you decided to launch the 360, no HDD suport for the games and using low level dvd is what will certainly lead to your down fall. Please just use BD as your storage medium for games and things might be good for you.
i think the winner of this war will pretty much determine the winner of the console war
hahahaha, in your face hd-dvd, no need for a hd-dvd addon for the 360. hopefully the 360 will get a blu-ray addon, or a dvd-25 or something cuase they'll beter not slow the ps3 down.
sorry bout double, read below please
this is great news for BD.. however, for those that say the fall of HDDVD will result in that of the 360, that may not be true. Rumors were a while ago that microsoft decided to only use HDDVD as an add on and not the standard disk player because they only wanted to cause a split in the HD disk market to squander its sales. Rumors assume that microsoft is planning to release HD content through the internet, not by HDDVD or other HD formatted disks. This would take advantage of the market split and confusion resulting from BD and HDDVD having the format war for so long, and microsoft hopes it would be the next "new and best" format through digital distribution. Anyways, my point is that since bluray has been able to lower the success of HDDVD and show a true market sense of HD disk content, then i think THAT will be what hurts microsofts plan for digital content, since they would be competing with a much stronger than hoped bluray... Thankyou for your time and GO BLURAY!
all we need now is paramount to join + universal then blu ray has well and truely won it but does this mean the BD players and the ps3 will then become cheaper???
They will surely become cheaper whether or not Paramount and Universal join. Its getting to be 2008, by 09 most Blu-rays players will be very cheap (probably around $200) and the BD themselves will be priced more closely to the current price of DVD's. The HD market is growing.
nice on! this means movies like Batman and I Am Legend will b Blu-ray exclusive!!!
sweet!!!!!!
@ IONIXX, LOL thats good man.
This is awesome news glad this stupid war is getting shorter, although im sure MS and Toshiba can prolong it a bit more by some retarded method.
Bring me the Matrix in blu-ray!!!!
one punch and it over like that, I thought this would be more a fight! The 360 peeps needs to get back to the lab to figure out somthing new. What could they come up with next! answer to that question is not alot left right now. i think 360 media revenue is doomed. it was fun!
It was just announced that the HD-DVD Promotion group has just bowed out of their press conference at CES tomorrow due to Warner siding with BD.
microsoft is goin digital distribution???? LOL!! whose gunna sit there and wait for their 25+ gig movie to download especially when alot of ppl still got a crappy connection like DSL....
I don't really care about which format is winning, why should anyone care?
