Is it Garmin? No, PSP

Posted on January 6th, 2008 at 22:19 EDT

Wouldn’t it be convenient to use your PSP to locate the nearest restaurant or night club? If you’re bored on the town, check out points of interest on your PSP’s new GPS capabilities. All of these will be possibilities from just a small UMD being slid into your PSP.

GPS on your PSP is going to be a formidable compliment to your everyday lives. Through your PSP, you will be able to download city guides for whichever city you happen to be visiting or living in. This will allow you check out the hottest night spots or the tastiest restaurants all within the palms of your hands. Sure, your parents may have an expensive GPS unit in their vehicle, but let’s be honest, how many high school kids with beat pinto’s do you know that have GPS installed? Well now you know at least one.

This improvement to your handheld will include 2D and 3D visualizations, not to mention customized settings and easy to use search functionality. You will be able to select points of interest and even get driving directions as well.

Just think, now your friends can pick a place to hang out over Skype, and if one of you has no idea where it is, you can just map it out and show up on time.

PSP users can finally rejoice after such limited standards. No longer will we feel the need to struggle to fit everything into our tiny pro duos. With Sony’s latest...

Oh Garmin is a GPS thing.

Title would have made more sense to me at least if it was "Is it TomTom? No, PSP"

@6: I feel you buddy! That's why I stick to the galleria/westchase area... Hopefully there's no monthly fee for a service or anything for this. Does anyone know?

This is great.  I've been waiting for this to hit state side for awhile.  I travel a lot and would find this really useful.

There should be an add-on module as well. Its not as easy as just a UMD. This is still sweet though.

I think that there will be more to it than a umd. I have tom tom installed on my mobile phone but I still need a gps aerial (connected via bluetooth) to connect to a satellite in order for it to work.

Sony were apparently disappointed with the sales of games for the PSP. This is simply because many PSP owners DONT use it primarily as a gaming platform. Personally, I download full movies onto mine, chuck music on it and steal bandwidth from time to time to surf the net. (You'll be surprised how many people dont use wireless WEP (wireless encryption) o_O Clearly Sony have cottoned onto the this, hence all the updates/programs coming out for it.

When I first purchased my PSP I barely used it. As time goes by I find myself using it more and more..... which is kinda odd, but certainly makes sense. It is a quality piece of kit.

Glad to hear it's on UMD, I don't need another reason to live in a WiFi hotspot with my PSP.  I wonder though, will there be a new version released every year?  Streets and buildings change a lot now.

Should come in handy, especially navigating the clusterf*** people affectionately name downtown KC.  No more paper maps in my truck.

I would imagine that the maps would come on UMD and the GPS device would connect to the Mini USB connection on the top, similar to the talkman microphone or the camera. I want this so please hurry up and release it before i go and buy a dedicated SAT NAV device
