Momentum continues to build for Sony’s PlayStation Portable in Japan this past week, as sales of the handheld gaming device eclipse those of its rivals for the week ended March 2.
According to the latest data from Media Create, the PSP claimed the top hardware spot ahead of the Nintendo Wii, with both systems selling 73,706 and 64,535 units each, respectively. The boost in sales is more than likely attributed to the release of the Mint PSP in the region.
The DS pitched up in third place with 51,922 units sold, followed by the PlayStation 3 (13,520) and PlayStation 2 (10,986)
Bringing up the rear is Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console, selling slightly higher than the previous week with 2,282 units sold.

Even at a slow pace of 50k a month, the PS3 install base is growing... and 73k in a week for the PSP is really good news for Sony!
