Kojima tired of people asking about MGS4 on Xbox 360

Posted on August 27th, 2008 at 04:58 EDT

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has admitted that he is growing tired of people asking him whether or not Konami has any plans to bring Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to the Xbox 360.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Kojima stated, "I've been doing a lot of interviews and stage shows, and half the questions are like 'Will MGS4 be coming out on 360 or other formats?', and in the near future I hope they'll ask me about Metal Gear, about us, about our future projects, and will stop caring about the hardware.”

When pushed specifically on MGS4’s exclusivity and its chances of coming to the 360, Kojima again reiterated that he believed the success of the franchise had become synonymous with the PlayStation brand, and that "because MGS4 was optimised for the PS3 it is probably not possible".

"But, you know, what kind of disturbs me sometimes, because a lot of people ask me about this PS3/360 question, is that it's not about the hardware - I want people to look at the game itself. Sometimes I even feel like it should be on a PC so that people don't ask me about hardware and platforms,” he continued.

When asked on the possibility of producing multiplatform games in the future, Kojima replied: "If we're talking about the future - not MGS4, but my future titles, if we're referring to that - if the hardware technology rises then obviously, you know, it won't be based on the hardware anymore. Probably I will first create the software and then, um, it's a strange word to say, but port to other hardware if that technological ability rises in all areas."

In other words they have to like the hardware before they port their games, at least that what it sounds like to me.

Sounds like for once someone is displaying a degree of loyalty to Sony, after all if it wasnt for Sony consoles about 80% of developers would be living in cardboard box's

I totally agree with you richkaos.  People tend to forget that Sony had the system that pushed 3rd party development in the first place.  All these companies turning to the darkside of 360 (Capcom, SquareEnix, Valve) should be thankful that they helped get as far as they have because of the Playstation.

It would take the xbox 720 to handle mgs5

Finally, from the mouth of one of the most influential game makers ... Sony is the the place to stay this gen, W00T!

What would make me laugh is if all the people porting games didn't bother with the 720 because they were all geared up for porting PS3 games to 360 finally putting a nail in Microsofts impetuous console days.  I can dream can't I?

@4 The playstation has no effect on Valve, they are PC games developers and I think they only made their games on the 360 because it's similar to develop for.

I'm so sick & tired of hearing all those X-360 owners/whatever's saying "what about us" and all that garbage! Just shut up and play with what you have!!

It's a circular trend really. But it's all about the botom line nowadays, which is fine. But there will always be gamers like me interested in unique and new IP that pushes the boundaries.

In that face I am going to focus more on exclusives than ports.

Totally agree with 3 & 4 (although valve was PC in the first place) "If hardware technology rises then it wont be based on hardware anymore." does that mean cross platform in the future? :S Anyways i cant wait for what he has in store for us MGS or not.

The 360 fan boys are pathetic. They want MGS4 to come out on their console more than anything because it is Sony's best game and one of the greatest games of all time easily. They need to grow up but some 360 gamers like what they have and leave us alone they are cool.

The reason it is not possible is becuase of the Bluray Disc. There is just way too much info on it to port over to a 360. When will people get that through their heads. "if the hardware technology rises" he's definatley talking about the bluray player in that statement.

  First off I LOVE MGS4!

But, lets be honest here, there are slowdown issues which i would say are in part due to the system not being able to cope with the amount of processing, or the game hasn't been 100% optimized.

What i'm saying is i doubt there was a real technical reason why the xbox couldn't hand;e MGS4.

To reiterate on my previous comment about slowdown issues.

Fire a machine gun fully auto on areas of heavy fighting and you will notice the rate of fire slow considerably.

IF, and this is a big if, If the game has been optimized perfectly and the PS3 is running at 100% then i would say perhaps the xbox couldn't handle it, but i honestly don't believe the game has been that well optimized, nore do i truly believe that the ps3 is maxed out.

Sounds like im 3itching, I promise thats not the case, as i said i love mgs4, i just think there has been a lot of potential BS floating round about how it's only possible on the PS3, when in reality even that point is open for discussion.

@23 I've never had those slow down issues at all in my game. Even when I did what your talking about.

@23 *(SPOILER)* I highly doubt the 360 can run the scene were raiden, and vamp are fighting, and Snake is picking off gecko's in split screen.  If the ps3 can do that.  Then I think it can surely handle shooting a gun.

@23

What are you talking about? I've played through and beatin the game multiple times and I have never once experienced one of these "slowdowns". They are non-existent. God, I sure hope no 360 fanboy sees your post, boy are they going to get the wrong idea...

i'm also tired of people asking that. those people should just get a ps3. i'm glad hideo kojima is telling everyone this. and i hope the next metal gear game will be ps3 exclusive too.

i can give you an example, if you go to a level like vista mansion, hide under the deck chair by the ool and fire your p90 or something.

You will notice (or at least i did) considerable slow down in the rate of fire, this is especially easy to notice if one pans.

In regard to the raiden vamp fight.

Im not a programmer i couldn't tell you if the ps3 being able to do that means it will be able to handle the vista mansion + machine gun thing.

In the end of the day im not trying to be a fanboy, im 25, i enjoy the video games at times i certainly don't have either the time or inclination to want to personally fight a war over a console.

All i say is what i have noticed, if some people have taken this as a sign that the all mighty Kojima productions perhaps didn;t do as perfect a job as believed then i apologize, all i intended to convey was that when I play MGS$ I NOTICE these things.

Perhaps is it my PS3, but if thats the case it doesn;t bode well for a 3 month old machine lol.

Anyway , take my post as you like, i never intended to pee people off.

@BAYBUD, Yeah I have noticed a bit of slowdown, not during gameplay but on the cut scenes when the camera pans across there is a bit jerkyness in some scenes, however this has nothing to do with the PS3, there where stories floating around that there was not enough space on the 50gb bluray disc for kojima to put the game onto, thats why you're probably experiencing this, don't forget MGS4 was supposed to be released back around xmas '07. Kojima didn't want to disappoint the fan base so maybe he did release before sorting out all the kinks. As I said in my earlier post, unless the xbox start to come with some sort of bluray drive MGS4 cannot be ported.

Asking Kojima to make MGS4 on the xbox360 is like asking Jacques-Louis David to paint the Oath of the Horatii with a crayon. Why would he insult his masterpeice in such a way?

A 50GB game on the 360? That would take 6 DVD9s (dual layered disk) to put MGS4 on the 360. Not to mention some downgrading to allow the 360's hardware to run it. Forget it and just get a PS3.
