PSP owners had fireworks set off upon Sony's announcement of Skype functionality coming to their handheld systems, but not all PSP owners will be able to share the same joy.
This new feature will only be coming to the new PSP model, the "Slim" or "Light" redesign, due to memory constraints on the original system. Sony's Nick Sharples officially released an explanation on this issue at CES and hopes to clear up any confusion.
“Although PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 are identical in basic functions, there are differences in hardware specifications to some extent and, for that reason, PSP-2000 may differ in features from PSP-1000. We had studied the possibility of supporting Skype with PSP-1000 but had to give it up because of the smaller size of main memory on PSP-1000 series.”
The discrepancy in memory is due to the fact that the original PSP has 32MB of memory while the new redesigned PSP was been bumped up to 64MB of internal memory. Our deepest condolences go out to the early adopters of the PSP, but PSP slim owners will certainly be looking forward to the day the brand new Skype logo appears on the XMB of our PSPs.

no need to get pissed off. I'm not selfish to the point of wishing non-progression for the PSP just because I own the original.
well im pretty bummed out, im an early adopter who just got screwed over. BIG TIME!
a little thinking can go a long way for those that think you got screwed. you take your old psp, some old games and some saved up cash. go to gamestop turn all that stuff in and get the new slim version. just a suggestion for you first adoptors.
sounds cool but Skype is less reliable than Vista.
well maybe not that bad....
humm you they want you to get away from CFW dang!!
I need to get a new PSP anyway so I can put custom firmware on my PSP-1000 and wreak some havoc in BestBuy.
bah thats super lame
psn id: gingo... awww well at least they have given an explanation for fobbing off the early adopters now it jus seems like buying a newer version is the only option
i'm amazed at all the stuff they are doing with a system that has been out for almost 5 yrs. it's really hard to keep up with everything they are adding to this system.
Yeah I saw this from the main sites keynote, sucks but I think this is without some perk for those who have the earlier version. Some compensation perhaps?
Great, but i dont have a new psp, oh well.
Cant see myself using it that much anyways.
