Slim PSP heads to Japan

Posted on July 17th, 2007
The PlayStation Premiere held every year shortly after E3 is Japan's source of updated info.

This year, Sony introduced the new, slim model of PSP which will release on September 20th for 19,500 yen ($162) in Japan. Sony also announced a few Japan-only features that will be coming around the same time.

SCE will be releasing a TV tuner that users can connect to the PSP through USB. The new feature doesn’t add much weight to the PSP at a mere 17 grams and keeps the system portable, but only works with the new model of PSP. Another restriction is the device only uses 1seg digital TV tuner (ISDB-T broadcasting format) which is only available through Japan’s airwaves.. The PSP TV tuner will be available in September and will cost 6,980 yen ($57), a competing price with low end USB TV tuners for PCs.

But Sony had much more up their sleeves. The company announced that the new PSP will be available in piano black, icy silver and ceramic white at E3, but Japan will be receiving even more than that. It will also get rose pink, lavender purple, and felicia blue, which Sony called the “Bloom Series”.

Along with new colors SCE also announced a new PSP that would make almost any Final Fantasy fan happy. Japan will be receiving a limited edition Final Fantasy PSP model for the 10th anniversary of Final Fantasy to go along with the new colors. Square Enix worked with SCE to create a Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII limited edition bundle which includes a special silver PSP complete with Final Fantasy logos, colored buttons, and a serial number. Along with the system, consumers will also receive a copy of the Crysis Core game and a keychain shaped like Zack, the games protagonist.

The Final Fantasy special edition will be available a week before the actual launch of the new PSP in September, allowing FF fans to get a early glimpse of the new system. FF fans will need to get to stores early as the package is limited to a production of 77,777 and will cost 25,890 yen ($212).
